How Much did the S&P 500 Gain in January and is the Trend "Up"?

During January 2011, the S&P 500 gained 2.3%. The Trend Signals for the S&P 500 are all still the same as last month. They all indicate that the direction of the long-term trend in the S&P 500 is “up” at this moment.

If you consider stepping into the market at this moment, please remember that this “up” trend is going on already for a while. When you enter the market in smaller steps, you limit your risk in case the trend turns around abruptly.

market is so tricky now. S&P

market is so tricky now. S&P is too high. maybe we need some correction to clarify the situation

Corrections when markets are too high

Yes, the market is trickly and corrections may occur. But I am not worried if the market is temporary "too high" or has been rising very fast compared to a moving average.

I cannot predict corrections on when they will take place and how deep they will be.

Thus I do not worry about it. A correction is by definition temporary. After the market has gone down, it will go up again and end up higher then before.

What I do worry about is to being able to differ between a correction and a prolonged downturn.

Our trend signals are focused on identifying the long-term trends, not the short term corrections.

Thus I am not sure if the market is "too high" and when a correction will occur. But I do know that we see at this moment a clear long-term "trend-up" (which could change direction of course, but that is with everything in life; if situations change, you just adapt.)
