Where Can You Open a Post Office Savings Account?

Post Office Savings Accounts Offer in Many Countries a Good Opportunity

A post office savings account is opened at a post office by someone who wants to save money over a period of time. It operates like a savings account in a bank and also allows for withdrawals whenever the owner requires.

The only variation is in their regulations because these are two different institutions with different objectives. The post office deals mainly with postal services in addition to money whereas banks only focus on money and stock market investing issues.

Even though America was an early adopter of the postal savings bank program it does not exist in the country currently like it does in other countries worldwide. In the US the United States Postal Service System was established in 1911 but discontinued in 1966.

Post Office Savings Countries

Like other possibilities to save, Post office savings systems are still in operation in countries as diverse as the UK, India, Japan, Germany and China.

Most of the post office facilities are established within a particular place and they target those who live within its environs.

This account service began as a result of the need for limited banking and financial services for those who were in charge of small amounts of money at different times.

Thus in many countries outside the United States, a person can open a savings account in any post office located in the following areas:

  • Rural settings: Most of the post offices in many countries were initially set up in the rural communities. It was thought that they did not require very sophisticated banking and savings services due to their low per capita income. It is not the case nowadays; we have several rural dwellers with improved incomes due to commercialized agriculture.

  • Suburbs: This is another place where a person can open this kind of an account. It is common to find at least one post office within the suburbs in any town. Residents find it safer to keep their money in post office savings account within the vicinity than in a bank located several miles away.

  • Central business district: A post office is one amenity that must always be found in a central business district and you can easily open a savings account with one as long as you have the minimum balance and relevant documentation.

  • Shopping Malls: This is also one facility that rarely lacks a post office offering account services.

These postal financial services were initially started to meet the banking needs of the communities in the rural areas but nowadays, they are used by both the rural and urban dwellers in several countries. Therefore, it is possible for anyone in these countries to open a post office savings account with ease in any location as long as you have the relevant documents.
